Amateur Skateboarding Vert Contest Recap:
A Promising Future for Vert Skateboarding

By: Chris Mitchell

(Sacramento, CA - September 3, 2005)  The amateur skateboarding event was one of the most promising events in recent years. Big names like Zach Miller and Alan Young were joined by talented up-and-comers like 9 year-old Curren Caples from Ventura, California and Adam Taylor out of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and everybody was ripping.

Neal Hendrix stood at the side of the ramp, shaking his head. “These guys are really good,” he said. “My whole generation – when we came up in the late 80s, early 90s – didn’t start getting good until 18 or 19, but now 12 and 13 year-olds are really talented.”

Zach Miller skated great in practice, pulling stylish airs over the ten-foot channel, but during his run, he couldn’t quite hold it together. He did some nice kickflip indys, but never made it over the channel, and ended up in 11th place.

Karen Jones of Santo Andre, Brazil skated a strong run, and finished in 7th place, in the top half of the field. 18 year-old Alan Young pulled the loftiest airs in the contest, and got high style points for his effortless technique, finishing in third place. Chris Gregson was the most consistent skater of the day, pulling kickflip indys to fakie and backside no-grab kickflips in both runs to finish in second.

And the gold medal went to Alex Perelson who put together a stylish line that was packed with liptricks and airs, including a flawless mctwist.

“We’re not just here to watch,” joked Hendrix after the comp. “We’re here to watch our backs!”
